A smaller world with small-world network when finding a job

The world is so small under the speeding up of the globalization. I even heard that if you wants find a person never meet, you just need to turn 6 people. There even a theory called Six Degrees of Separation.

I like Sodoku, a small game. First you get a puzzle, some you know but the others are empty. Then you try to fill in all the black, maybe just with a pen or a pencil just like the day you step in the world, you don not know some people and have little money. Usually 6 people cannot solve all the people around the world because it's very likely that all your friends and the friends of your friends never have been to Africa (just a example of different continent). But now it's really a small case to find a person in different continent in your Twitter or Facebook since we have the Social Networking.

Social Networking, in my mind, is a kind of Soduku. They are both a kind of network model. You have something known and something to know just as You must try to (or involuntary) meet mew friends and enlarge your social hub.
A small-world network is a type of mathematical graph in which most nodes are not neighbors of one another, but most nodes can be reached from every other by a small number of hops or steps. That's the best definition I ever found for this kind of social networking. I believe it's beauty. I don not need to care who you are, where are you from and what you did. I just know you for your blog and we are friends.

Actually social networking via Internet can be too complex to your imagination. I once came cross an article called <<Doing as Jesus Networking>>. In which it took a man named Jesus and find his near social friends when he search for a job.
In this picture we can find some very interesting things, for example, his social network is just like a spider chart. His friend Peter know Paul very well. Actually we fine to kind of social networking model, i.e. spider chart and star chart. A star means more friends when spider chart usually means tighter and more efficient.

Yet there are many other ways for you to find a interesting job. Find a job just like solve a Soduku in the social networking issue. Now a team(the Oracle of Bacon) posts a website to find the shortest way for a person to find another(the employer).

The picture of this chart is to start with any actor or actress who has been in a movie and connect them to Kevin Bacon in the smallest number of links possible. At last we got Mary Pickford's path, only five people. It's have a efficient arithmetic and a large database and it works when you come into a similar situation when you manage to find a job.

It's slow but it do change the way we think. Maybe one day it means a totally different life style. Actually I like the film with the same name even better. Six Degrees of Separation, You are in and you are here. Social networking is everywhere. That's life.

    1. if the so-called "earth village"do happen in our generation, I believe the most useful things for us is the exchange of knowledge. It helps in the development of our society, say,we invented the paper and the world have a more quickly evolution speed since.
I believe that's what social network do bring to us.

  2. I like the game Sudoku too. The metaphor you use to describe social networking is brand new to me. I also like the theory of Six Degrees of Separation, perhaps with social network now, the theory need to be amended again. =p The world is become smaller and smaller now with more and more convenient information conveyance.
